JJ Abrams just came from the explosive new Mission Impossible sequel – Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. But even with the new Mission Impossible still being shown in theaters worldwide, Abrams is already hard at work preparing for the Star Trek sequel.

Abrams is notorious for being quite secretive about any of the projects that involve him so it’s not a surprise that he is playing his cards close to his chest for the Star Trek sequel. But even with such strong resolve not to reveal anything, Abrams is still providing some very interesting information – one that is just enough to whet the appetites of Star Trek fans and science fiction sons.

First, Abrams said that the script for the sequel is ready. The writing team is composed of Damon Lindelof, Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The sets are also being put up, and by next month, the director—known for being an exacting perfectionist—will be ready to shoot. He said the sequel will have several improvements from the first: ”I’m hoping that as we do the next one, all the mistakes that I’ve made that I’ve hopefully learned from, I can bring to this one and hope make it better.”

Though Abrams is a big fan of the IMAX format (he says it’s his favorite) he did say that they will start filing in 2-d before doing a high end conversion. With the film’s generous production timeline, he and his team will have a lot of time to tweak both the content and the format to meet his high personal standards.

Tarsem Singh, who is known for his fantastical visuals, is preparing to ready his next project, Killing on Carnival Row. This is going to be Singh’s new project after his new take on Snow White, Mirror Mirror.

Killing on Carnival Row is a fantasy movie with the script written by Travis Beacham. The script was bought about six years ago by the producing tandem of Arnold and Anne Kopelson. In fact, Killing on Carnival Row is Beacham’s first sold script. He will go on to write the scripts for the Clash of The Titans remake, Guillermo del Toro’s much anticipated Pacific Rim, the planned remake of Black Hole and the reimagined 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

Killing on Carnival Row is a dark fantasy thriller set in a city called Burgue. One side of the city is populated by seal-like creatures, while the other side is Carnival Row, which is a ghetto that houses the disnfranchised winged fairies. The movie deals with the investigation into a murder and an unknown antagonist who is killing the residents of Carnival Row one by one.

Singh’s commitment to Killing on Carnival Row, which is expected to be released on June 2012, is definite proof that the director is pushing his output to quite a prolific level. Previously, it took him years to put a movie out — The Cell in 2000 and then The Fall in 2006. He’s pushing more movies now though. Aside from Mirror, Mirror, he is also coming out with a 3D Greek mythology movie. Singh himself has indicated that he wants to make one movie a year.

The planned movie will be directed by the director of the last four Harry Potter movies, David Yates.

According to Yates he will jump on board not just as a director but also as one of the creative forces that will develop the film from the conception stage onwards. Asked about his plans for the Dr. Who film, Yates shared that it will be a completely new Dr. Who film and will not be related at all to the smash hit Dr. Who series that began again 2005. This means no Eccleston, Tennant or Smith Dr. Who characters. The movie will still be developed by Worldwide Productions, the same people who developed the new Dr. Who series.

Another implication of what Yates revealed is that Dr. Who series writers Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffatt will not be involved in the development of the Dr. Who movie. This may get some very mixed reactions from fans. While some may welcome another fresh take on the Dr. Who mythos, others may scoff at the non-involvement of Davies and Moffatt – especially the latter, who has written some of the most memorable episodes in the series.

Yates said he and his team are currently looking for writers who will get involved in the project. One of the most important things to him, he shared, is to make sure that there is a definite “British sensibility” to the script and to the movie.

Expect to see the Dr. Who movie in about three years.

Sci-fi guns will always remain the fascinating childhood attractions for every kid, and they continue to remain the same even within the mind of a growing person.

The credit for the increasing popularity of the sci-fi guns actually goes to the sci-fi movies, where we first see such guns. The firepower of the guns shown in the sci-fi movie is what actually fascinated the children as well as the growing adults. The super powerful fire of a sci-fi movie gun can deteriorate any kind of bad character or villains.

Such scenes in the sci-fi movie leave an impression on the kid’s mind and they then need one for themselves. As soon as any sci-fi movie is released the replicas of the guns used in the movie is also released. Both the guns and the movies play a major role in publicizing and promoting each other.

Here we have created an inventory of the top 10 sci-fi movie guns that have fascinated the mind of kids and adults alike over the decades.

9. Star Wars – Han Solo DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol

There is nothing in this out-of-the-world gun that cannot be loved. The design is based upon the German Mauser and gives an impression of something that even being small is effective.

8. Robocop – Auto-9

This gun, owned by the supercop has been replicated extensively as a toy and also as an Airsoft. Even though Robocop has several other weapons with him, but Auto-9 is the leading weapon he uses to deliver justice. It is also one of the most sophisticated looking of all the weapons.

7. Judge Dredd – Lawgiver

This is the gun owned by one of the most brutal, but yet coolest sci-fi characters. An equally cruel firearm, this gun accompanies Judge Dredd through his night expeditions when he is busy unleashing his punishments. The gun fires different types of rounds – explosive shells, incendiary rounds and ricochet bullets and much more.

6. The Fifth Element – Zorg ZF-1 Pod Weapon

The Zorg ZF-1 Pod Weapon is used by the deceitful Jean Baptiste Zorg in The Fifth Element. This weapon is capable of delivering different lethal shots that can kill, wound or even cause the discharge of bowel contents from the victim. A unique feature in the gun is the “replay” feature, where the fired round can trace the previous target even when facing in another direction.

5. Hellboy – Samaritan

This is perhaps the holiest of all the weapons. It is said to be made from church bells, while the handle is made using wood from the crucifix. Hellboy is regularly found pounding the bad ones with the different types of ammunitions such as garlic shavings and holy water shells.

4. Men In Black – The Noisy Cricket

The Noisy Cricket is simply among the funniest weapons to be found ever in sci-fi movies. The scene cannot be forgotten when Agent J has his smile flying away when he fired this tiny gun, almost losing his arm and body. This gun looks something like a handheld metal syringe, but it delivers the lethal power of a C4 block.

3. Ghostbusters – Proton Pack

The Proton Pack is made by the celebrated Dr. Egon Spengler. This weapon fires particle beams that can bring down the unnatural entities.

2. Star Wars – Jawa Blaster

The Jawa Blaster is made from a British Enfield rifle, having a grenade launcher fixed crudely to its barrel. The crude looks of the gun clearly reflect the typical scavenging nature of the Jawa, giving a kind of history and depth to their character.

1. Aliens – M41A Pulse Rifle

An iconic weapon on the screen, the M41A Pulse Rifle is simply the most popular weapon in sci-fi movies. It can deliver 99 shots of 10mm rounds that can pierce armor, making it the most lethal of all the double-handed weapons used in movies.

Solomon Kane, from the title alone, evokes the same mental image as “Alan Quatermain” or “Abraham Van Helsing” – either the movie will be about a swashbuckling hero or a sage protagonist with a wealth of knowledge used to help others.

But Solomon Kane is neither of these fictional characters. Based on the character created by pulp writer Robert E. Howard, Solomon Kane is a wandering puritan who lived in the 17th century and whose goal is to vanquish evil wherever he encounters it. The character appeared in many stories in Weird Tales, the seminal title that brought many high quality pulp horror stories.

I am not thoroughly familiar with Solomon Kane as a character so I’ll base this review solely on what I have seen in the movie and based on what I have just seen, Solomon Kane is a character that should really be given as much focus as the other comic book characters enjoying the adoration of the public.

Solomon Kane revisits the same familiar tropes of faith and repentance but given a deliberate Hollywood polish of expansive cinematography and special effects. Michael J. Bassett, who both wrote and directed the movie, tried to do his best to cram as much of Solomon Kane’s origins in order to give the audience a heftier idea of why he seeks redemption. As “origin” movies go, Bassett also had to contend with trying to cram in as much background story as he could without eating up too much of his available screen time. It’s a worthwhile effort and I feel that even though he has not fully achieved his goal, it was still a passable effort that gave us a good glimpse of Solomon Kane before he repented and began his quest for the deliverance of his soul.

Luckily, Bassett had a very capable actor in James Purefoy who injected just enough pathos in his performance that by the middle of the movie, the audience really roots for him. It is quite easy to ham it up in a movie like this but Purefoy managed to evade this easy trap. His Kane is fractured, conflicted and tortured but there is a nobility that shines through and a goodness that emerges naturally in his performance. Speaking of actors, I was quite happy to see the great Pete Postlethwaite as the well-meaning William Crowthorn. Actors like him always give any movie a worthwhile sheen and as always he delivers here. I feel that Jason Flemyng is thoroughly underused as the villain Malachai. His screen time is just not enough.

The cinematography was a bit hit and miss. I don’t know if it was the copy that I was viewing but there were some scenes that were a bit too poorly lighted. But it’s undeniable that Bassett has a great eye. There were some gorgeous scenes that would put to shame most of the hacks in Hollywood — which makes me wonder why Bassett is not being given more high profile projects. Solomon Kane is loads better than the very poorly made Van Helsing. To compare him to Stephen Sommers is an insult to Bassett.

I am also a bit underwhelmed by the movie’s ending. You get this feeling of wanting more but from the looks of it, it seems that the people behind the movie are hoping to make a franchise out of it. Hopefully, the movie has performed well enough to actually merit a sequel.

All in all, Solomon Kane is one of those action/fantasy movies that are not being noticed because it doesn’t have the pull of an A-list actor. But I think the beauty of this movie is precisely the fact that it is not totally consumed by Hollywood’s touch. Fantasy/action fans would be well advised to check this movie out.

Rating: B+

More than a year ago I blogged about the planned Red Sonja remake that Robert Rodriguez was planning. In this remake, his then girlfriend Rose McGowan will get the titular role of Red Sonja. Rodriguez was set to produce it with Douglas Aarniokoski as the director. The team even released teaser posters featuring McGowan in her sexy Red Sonja costume.

But with nary a sign of the Red Sonja project moving there are doubts that it will push through. Recently, Rose McGowan was announced to have snagged a role in the Conan remake and she won’t be playing Red Sonja in this movie. She will reportedly play the role of a witch.

Now there are rumors that the Red Sonja role and movie is being offered to Megan Fox. I think she is a worthy choice for the role. She definitely has the femme fatale looks that is needed to give justice to Red Sonja. All she needs to do is to put on some muscles and a little weight and she’s all set to go.

Hopefully, this project pushes through. I know that millions of men will be waiting for Fox to don the Red Sonja outfit.

In addition to McGowan, Aarniokoski is apparently off the project as well and they are looking for another writer to take a pass at David N. White’s script.

Pajiba says that an offer has now been made to “Transformers” star Megan Fox to play the mythical flame-haired comic-book vixen with a sword. Will she take the role? We’ll have to wait and see.

In June ’08, the project was described as follows:

In her return we find Red Sonja, a young girl risen from the ashes of tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time. The mythical red-head blindly seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family. In her path of destruction she discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers: to save all Hyrkania from the villainous Kulan Gath.

The success of James Cameron’s Avatar has prompted other directors and movie studios to follow the bandwagon. A slew of new 3D movie projects are being announced almost daily and one of these new movie projects could be the planned Alien prequel being made by Ridley Scott and 20th Century Fox.

Shadow Locked, a sci-fi site from the UK, was able to interview Roger Christian, the art director who worked on Star Wars and Alien. Christian is in a good position to talk about the prequel because he has met with Scott about the movie and there’s talk that he could possibly work on it again with Scott. He did confirm that it is going to be shot in 3D. He also shared Scott has a clear vision of where he wants the movie to go and hinted that with the whole concept “had legs to go on”, there is a possibility that a new trilogy may be in the offing.

I’m certainly looking forward to this. I think Scott’s Alien is one of the best sci-fi horror movies ever made. And I even think that it blows Cameron’s Aliens out of the water.

I was blown away by La Femme Nikita and Leon and fell in love with the cheesy sci-fi stylings of The Fifth Element. I even liked Subway. But lately I have not been very impressed with his ouevre as a director (his writing credits stand up a bit better in the Oughts though).

But his recent project has caught my attention once again. Les Aventures Extraordinaires D’Adele Blanc-Sec is a movie that is as strange as they come. The movie, which will star Louise Bourgoin, is set in 1912 and tells the story of a young reporter, Adele Blanc-Sec, who is like an Indiana Jones archetype who battles with corrupt politicians, crooks, scientists and devil worshippers. In this movie, she battles what may probably be her biggest nemesis, a pterodactyl that sows terror on Paris. Yes, you read it right, a pterodactyl.

I am so watching this movie.

Of course, Conan is more familiar to film fans as the character that made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star.

The star turning power of Conan is the reason why it is such a coveted role. With talks that a Conan remake is already being developed, actors left and right are being touted as the perfect Conan. You would, of course, expect to see familiar names and established stars vying for the role of Conan. But th announcement of Lionsgate and Millennium Films about the new Conan has caught quite a few people by surprise. The role was announced to have been given to Jason Momoa. Yes, I don’t know who he is either.

The 30 year old Momoa is a virtual unknown. His most prominent work before Conan was in the sci-fi TV show Stargate Atlantis. He’s also set to appear in the new HBO mini series, Game of Thrones. I’m not familiar with Momoa’s work but from his pictures, he does look like he could be perfect for the role. I’ll hold off judgement on the guy’s acting skills because a) I haven’t seen his work and b) Conan is not really going to win anyone an Oscar — if you can grunt and look good doing it then you’ll perfect for the role.

Oh, and speaking of grunts and Oscars, Mickey Rourke has been offered the role of Corin, Conan’s father.

Conan will begin filming this March 15.

Count me in as one of those people. I’m a huge Tolkien fan so It’s already a given but with the adaptation to be directed by Guillermo del Toro, who is one of my favorite directors, my excitement for the movie has doubled.

The initial release schedule for The Hobbit was already pegged for December 2011, and that’s just a little less than two years away. But then, this is Hollywood and schedules are sometimes meant to be broken. According to Warner Bros., it looks like The Hobbit will only be ready by the last quarter of 2012. A full year after the initial 2011 scheduled release.

Where does the movie — two of them, actually — stand in terms of its work schedule? The script for the second film is still being finished by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Del Toro. Only after this has been submitted and approved would a budget for both movies be locked in along with the start of casting.

Looks like we’re in for a longer wait, Tolkien fans.

If last July’s announcement from Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures will be our basis, then Raimi is going to direct a movie based on the geek-attracting Warcraft universe. Many a geek have lost sleep playing the excellent real time strategy games of Warcraft, and we haven’t even touched on the kind of insane obsession people have on World of Warcraft, the MMORPG that has been the cause of many breakups, divorces, and a growing number of 20 year old virgins.

The Warcraft universe would really be perfect for Raimi, whose vision is perfect for the kind of high fantasy world that Warcraft will absolutely require. Even though a screenwriter has also been announced last October (Robert Rodat, who wrote The Patriot) and the film is in the outline/story phase it looks like Raimi actually hasn’t made a final decision yet. It seems that the Spider-Man announcement took some of the wind off his sails and he’s now reconsidering all of his options before committing fully to a project. Rumblings are that he is leaning towards making a small film first — maybe to take the slimy taste off his mouth after being shafted by a big movie studio — especially since he had a lot of fun making “Drag Me To Hell.” But, again, everything’s still up in the air.

Sir Ian McKellen recently shared some news about The Hobbit, the prequel to the Lord of The Rings trilogy, which will be helmed by Guillermo del Toro.

In an interview with Empire Magazin, McKellen said the scripts for the two films (yes, it will be divided into two movies) will be submitted very soon. The next step will be budgeting the movies and then finally casting can begin. He did reveal in a latter interview that the Lord of The Rings cast whose characters were included in The Hobbit will be returning. Of course, this includes McKellen who will reprise his role of Gandalf.

McKellen shared that Del Toro plans to shoot the movie for 383 days, which is quite a long time.

Roland Emmerich, who directed Independence Day, recently weighed in on a possible sequel. The director revealed that he and producer Dean Devlin are still intent on making a sequel especially since they’ve already thought up of a good idea. The difficulty is on how Fox is going to incorporate Devlin’s, Emmerich’s and Will Smith’s deals together. The studio is thinking up of a way to make a package that all parties will be happy with. Fox has floated the idea of doing it without Smith who is a “gross player,” but Emmerich said that the mega actor is crucial to the franchise.

Transformers 3 fans now have a real reason to get excited. Director Michael Bay has officially announced the release date for the third installment in the hit franchise.

In his official web site he revealed that a story has now been developed for the Transformers sequel and the release date is slated for July 1, 2011, a year earlier from the speculated 2012 release date.

Bay revealed that he had a meeting with Industrial Light and Magic and that he will be going to Hasbro’s headquarters with writer Ehren Kruger to talk about new characters for the movie.

Oh, and he also left a little note for Megan Fox, who has been badmouthing the Michael Bay and the Transformers franchise.

“P.S. Megan Fox, welcome back. I promise no alien robots will harm you in any way during the production of this motion picture. Please consult your Physician when working under my direction because some side effects can occur, such as mild dizziness, intense nausea, suicidal tendencies, depression, minor chest hair growth, random internal hemorrhaging and inability to sleep. As some directors may be hazardous to your health, please consult your Doctor to determine if this is right for you.”

Hilarious, and just slightly upped Bay’s cred for me.

Movie remakes in Hollywood are being developed at a fairly regular rate of late. I’ve always maintained that it’s Hollywood running out of original ideas and just zeroing in on a quick buck. I’ve already accepted it as par for the course.

But what made me do a double-take was news of a remake OF A REMAKE. And no less than acclaimed director David Cronenberg is behind this.

Cronenberg is reportedly developing a remake of The Fly, which he famously remade in 1986 with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. Of course, the original The Fly movie was released in 1958 and has been one of the venerated sci-fi classics. Cronenberg will be directing the new remake and will probably also write the screenplay.

It makes you think — what do you call a remake of a remake?

I decided to turn on the TV tonight while working. I was getting sleepy and needed the background noise to help me stay awake and to somewhat keep me company. I tuned in to one of the movie channels and Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem was being shown. I’ve seen the movie before. Well, bits and pieces of it because it bored me to death. Fortunately, the work helped me to stay awake and finally I saw the ending of this disaster of a movie. With the introduction of Mrs. Yutani (Aliens mythology fans will know why the name is important), I kind of appreciated the attempt, however flimsy it was, to tie it in to the larger history and mythology of Aliens. It made me think that a sequel could be a cool thing just as long as it won’t turn out as bad as AVP: Requiem.

Apparently, there is a sequel of sorts that’s being developed. Predators, to be directed by Nimrod Antal, is set to begin production on September 28. The movie, to be produced by Robert Rodriguez, will be about a group of people stranded on a Predator planet. Predators is slated for release on July 7, 2010. Hopefully this one is going to be a good one. But then after Requiem, any other sequel or spin-off is bound to be better.

20th Century Fox is releasing the sci-fi action-adventure, written by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch, on July 7, 2010.

I felt like writing about “Bicentennial Man” though not because of the sci-fi element but because, having seen it again lately, I remembered just how much of a tearjerker the movie was, and still is. If you haven’t seen “Bicentennial Man” yet don’t expect to be surprised by an unexpected twist in the plot or a sci-fi film full of imagination that is truly out there but do expect to be do expect to be immersed in a story of a robot reaching for his destiny, which is to be recognized for his humanity.“Bicentennial Man” is a remarkable film not for its novelty but because it is a great example of good old storytelling. It is one truly compelling film.

Other similar films that I enjoyed are “AI” and “I Robot”. For me AI was as good as tearjerker as “Bicentennial Man”. I think I almost died from a clogged nose right at the end when he “slept” with his mom. “I Robot” was also enjoyable with more action scenes and hence a bigger hit but for me it’s storytelling just wasn’t at par with the other two “humanized robot” stories.

A land full of wonder, mystery, and danger…

It’s Alice in Wonderland and the trailer is here! The trailer captures the “Alice in Wonderland” we all read as a youngster so perfectly that it leave me with the very same feelings I felt then – awe with a tinge of fear. Ok so I felt more than just a tinge of fear when I was little (Read my post Alice in Wonderland’s Wondrous Pictures) but the good thing about the trailer is that at least it inspires more wonderment than fear. No need for me to keep on going because you can watch the video below.

If you haven’t seen “Alice in Wonderland’s” trailer yet I wonder what your waiting for?

Excited? Then better start preparing for that all important date because we’ve got plenty of waiting time. Alice in Wonderland won’t be out till March next year.

I saw “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” yesterday and as can be expected it was good. My main problem with the movie though is that it just left me hanging! I haven’t read “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” and since I do enjoy the movies a lot don’t plan on reading it until I’ve seen the last film. I know I’ve got it backwards but it’s just more exciting to watch without knowing what’s going to happen next. I do love reading but this time the film adaptations are just so good (despite minor scenes) that I don’t think it would do a disservice to the book by watching the film before reading it.

Anyway, back to the “Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince.” What I liked about the movie (let’s not discuss the story anymore because we all know it’s good) is that it delivered. The CG was spectacular, a lot better than in the last movie “Order of the Phoenix” where we were introduced to Hagrid’s giant half-brother, Grawp. Grawp was adorable but like the centaurs was obviously CG. In contrast I don’t remember any part of the “Half-Blood Prince” looking unrealistic. Watching the film makes you think that everything is being shot as is.

The actors/actresses did not disappoint as well. The cast has obviously grown not just in age but in maturity in their acting skills. Those that stood out to me were Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), who was able to embody his very conflicted role, Rupert Grint (Ron Weasly), though I must be biased because Ron is my favorite character, and Frank Dillane (older Tom Riddle), who just sent shivers down my spine…he was so creepy! Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) did a good job as ever showing as Harry growing to be more than a boy. Others who did not stand only because in relation to their own achievements as actors (they always do an excellent job) are Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix), Alan Rickman (Snape) and Michael Gambon (Dumbledore). Cutest character in this movie is the same one in the last movie – Luna Lovegood (played by Evanna Lynch). She’s so cute I can’t help but wish Harry would just hook up with her instead of Ginny.

“Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” is just around the corner and muggles worldwide are all breathless with expectation. I won’t be recounting any of the past Harry Potter films nor going to be giving a synopsis of what this film will be about (If you don’t know yet then just grab a copy of the book.) but will be simply blabbing about the latest in the lives of the Potter film stars.

As we all know Emma Watson had a very public fiasco when the wind conspired with her hormone ridden teenage boys fans and flicked open her dress for her to reveal nice long legs and her underwear. She showed “Hermione-like” calmness on David Letterman and good humour when she said, “At least I’m wearing underwear.” When it comes to her kissing scene with Rupert Grint (Ron Weasly) both of them agree was uncomfortable. As Rupert said, “I remember being inches away from her lips and thinking, ‘Good lord, this is going to be strange.” Emma Watson even goes as far as saying that with Rupert being “like a brother” to her kissing him “felt like incest.” A thing the little kids who will be watching (I think this one’s rated PG and not PG-13 like the last two films.) need not know. Whatever the case, you can be sure their unease won’t show on screen. Of course we’ll have to wait for “Deathly Hallows” till we see this scene.

As for their future beyond the Harry Potter films Daniel Radcliffe has expressed his desire to continue acting, Emma Watson is not yet sure though she seems to be seriously considering on going to college, and Rupert Grint is just sure that he’ll be missing the shoots and is adopting a wait and see attitude on what the future holds for him.

As for muggles worldwide all we can hope for is that wherever you are, come Wednesday, it won’t be literally raining on our parade, which is what happened in the London premiere. I guess it just goes to show that their magic wand works only in the film and not in real life.

May 8 was Star Trek day for me. Armed with food and drinks I sat in the middle of the cinema (made sure I got good seats) and finished my food before the movie started (I was so restless). I was a little nervous that the movie would disappoint. It didn’t.

SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read this post if you haven’t seen the movie yet.

I know the entire plot changes how the Star Trek universe will proceed in the future, after all what will happen with two Spocks? I know some purists would love to have old Star Trek back but for the most part I would think that people, old Trekkers or new converts, are as happy as I am with the film. It just grabs your attention from the start and continues to hold it till the end. Non-trekkers wouldn’t have a hard time following the plot either because the movie is self-contained. My friend who has no clue said it was better though for the brief background I provided about the Enterprise and its crew right before the movie started (I managed to run my mouth off in between bites and sips).

As for the acting they were superb though I am left with mixed feelings about some things such as Spock and Uhura’s romance and Scotty. Simon Pegg was really funny but I’m thinking that he’s a bit too jaunty compared to the original Scotty. The ones I liked were Eric Bana (Nero), Anton Yelchin (Chekov), and Zachary Quinto (Spock). Everyone gives well-deserved praise to Karl Urban for his faithful portrayal as Dr McCoy. The best part for me though was seeing Leonard Nimoy step into his role. Zachary Quinto may do a really good job but Leanoard Nimoy really owns the character. I’m so glad the plot included a future Spock in it even though it throws the entire Star Trek universe into a spin.

When it comes to the effects and action sequences there’s no doubt about it that Star Trek is a winner. Naysayers may say that it just makes this movie a movie for the new “ADD Star Trek audiences” and that it lacks the depth and intelligence of old Star Trek movies but I say that the effects just gives the Star Trek concept justice. The movie may not reveal all the rich history of Star Trek but it is a great introduction if we want to get Star Trek back. For me, I’m just hoping that this will be a new start of a whole generation of Star Trek.

Star Treks’ trailer has me all excited. Though it has always had a very faithful following the movie series was not something I really liked. The funny thing is that I am so into the books but for some reason never got into the movies. I blame it on my hyper-active imagination which makes the movies pale in comparison. This time though it might be different.

Star Trek has always been cool but you just have to see the trailer to see why it’s gotten even cooler. I do hope the movie doesn’t disappoint. For now though the verdict is that Star Trek is making a huge comeback. Props to JJ Abrams for managing to revitalize the movie…or at least the trailer. Hopefully the trailer editors didn’t do too good a job making the trailer tons better than the actual movie.

The cast also helps with Chris Pine as James T Kirk, Zachary Quinto as the young Spock (That alone makes the movie worth watching! Sorry but I’m obviously a fan.), Leonard Nimoy as the old Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Eric Bana (another one for the ladies) as Nero, and Winona Ryder as Amanda Grayson.

The movie premieres May 8. Come May I will surely be dragging people with me to see the movie. My guess though is that the dragging part won’t be necessary once my friends see the trailer.

Terminator Salvation isn’t set to come out till May but everyone’s already really excited about the movie thanks to director Manuel Balce Ceneta McG’s panel discussion during the movie trailer’s premiere at WonderCon last Saturday.

The movie is still very much in the works with some key elements still unsettled such as the appearance of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton and what role their icon characters will take in the movie. What is settled though is that the movie will be more about the story than the action sequences. It goes back to the question of humanity and according to McG asks, “Where does humanity lie? If you have an artificial hip, or an artificial heart, you’re still human, right? Well, where does that line end up being drawn? We’re flirting with the point now to where it’s not necessarily science fiction anymore. It is a real issue and part of what this film does is explore that question.” This movie, as Anton Telchin (Kyle Reese) puts it “honors the legacy of those first two movies.”

I say great news for Terminator fans that were sorely disappointed with the last movie (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines). Terminator Salvation is out to redeem the Terminator name and it seems like it’s going to do just that.

I have to admit that I was a Street Fighter fan way back in college. No, I wouldn’t shame myself in being a fan of the horrid Street Fighter movie! I’m talking about the video game. I used to play Chun-Li while my then boyfriend kicked my butt around practicing the moves of the other characters. So despite the fact that the 1994 Street Fighter film was really bad I couldn’t help but hope that the new movie “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” would end up great, after all it is more than a decade after the first Street Fighter movie, right? Well it seems that I am dead wrong since there still isn’t a single good neutral review about the movie.

Here are some of reviews on the movie:

I’d say this is roughly 20 times better than the first “Street Fighter” movie. It’s still a waste of time, but unlike the game, it’s over in 95 minutes. – Chicago Tribune

Even by low-budget video-game adaptation standards, this one is a stinker. – MSNBC

With reviews like that my expectations has hit rock bottom so I guess I can safely see the movie without being disappointed but then again Variety says, “Even with the low expectations “The Legend of Chun Li” engenders, it still somehow manages to be a letdown.” Oh well this means I’ll just wait for it to come out not DVD but on HBO. No sense wasting my money!
