Its pretty obvious that one of the biggest winners at the Box Office this year is Twilight, because of the female teen (and not quite teen) fan base. Because of this, the studios have been churning out more films for and about the girls, like Sex and the City Movie, which was a huge success and the upcoming Hannah Montana the Movie, also slated to be the hit of 2009.

Summit Entertainment distribution president Richie Fay said last weekend:

There’s nothing like the power of the box office,…There’s a segment out there that probably hasn’t been given their fair due, and now certainly you’re going to find creative folks out there [looking at more female-driven properties].”

Even Avi Lerner of Millennium Films said that he realized that the release was given out even before the deal was done. Lerner said that Ratner will only commit if he agrees with the budget, how the special effects will be done and where the film will be shot.

Ratner though is not even corroborating the information. He said that he is close to getting the go-ahead to direct Beverly Hills Cop 4.

The Mickey Rourke supernatural thriller from the 80′s is going through the remake machine.

Angel Heart, which was shown in 1987, has been greenlit to be remade. Michael de Luca will partner with Alison Rosenweig and Michael Gaeta to bring the new version of the film to life.

The big break in the project happened when the UK firm that owns the rights to the film agreed to give remake rights. The original film was produced by the defunct Carolco and was distributed by TriStar. The trio of producers not only optioned the film but the book rights to Falling Angel itself, the book from which the movie was adapted.

The original Angel Heart caused a lot of controversy because of its very provocative sex scenes between Rourke and Lisa Bonet. Robert de Niro also starred in the movie as the devil.

M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening has yet to be shown (it’s coming out on Friday the 13th), but his next project has already been earmarked… and it’s the unlikeliest type of movie you’d see him do.

Shyamalan is currently working on the live action adaptation of the hit cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. Speaking at the Licensing International Expo 2008, Shyamalan and Nickelodeon top brass officially announced the project, which will be officially called The Last Airbender (the Avatar was dropped to avoid confusion with James Cameron’s movie of the same name). He revealed that casting has begun for the movie and he even said that some of these new finds are going to be future stars. The film is slated to be shown in 2010.

Fans are quite excited about Shyamalan’s involvement. The general consensus is that he will do a great job adapting the cartoon to film. Shyamalan has also talked about the film before and what he intends to do and this has also met with fan approval.

There are rumors circulating around Hollywood that Marvel Studios and Edward Norton, who stars in The Incredible Hulk, are having a dispute regarding the movie’s final cut. According to the rumors Edward Norton and director Louis Leterrier “hit it off” when they met and the whole production of the movie didn’t hit a snag. The problem arose during post production when Marvel wanted to put out a very “commercial film”, one that is filled with action sequences and only runs for under two hours (in other words a version for idiots. Norton and Leterrier, on the other hand, wanted a more character driven film that would run for two hours and fifteen minutes.

Norton has come out to say that the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. To decide for yourself, I’ve posted below Norton’s statement regarding the issue. You decide:

“Like so many people I’ve loved the story of The Hulk since I was a kid, so it was thrilling when Marvel asked me to write and help produce an altogether new screen incarnation, as well as play Bruce Banner. I grew up reading Marvel Comics and always loved the mythic dimension and contemporary themes in the stories, and I’m proud of the script I wrote. In every phase of production, including the editing, working with Louis Leterrier has been wonderful…I’ve never had a better partner, and the collaboration with all the rest of the creative team has been terrific. Every good movie gets forged through collaboration, and different ideas among people who are all committed and respect the validity of each other’s opinions is the heart of filmmaking. Regrettably, our healthy process, which is and should be a private matter, was misrepresented publicly as a ‘dispute,’ seized on by people looking for a good story, and has been distorted to such a degree that it risks distracting from the film itself, which Marvel, Universal and I refuse to let happen. It has always been my firm conviction that films should speak for themselves and that knowing too much about how they are made diminishes the magic of watching them. All of us believe The Incredible Hulk will excite old fans and create new ones and be a huge hit…our focus has always been to deliver the Hulk that people have been waiting for and keep the worldwide love affair with the big green guy going strong.”

Awesome Hong Kong director Johnnie To is set to direct Red Circle. The movie is actually a remake of a 70′s thriller that starred Alain Delon entitled Le Rouge Cercle.

This remake is fast turning into one hell of a movie. Both Chow Yun Fat and Liam Neeson are currently in negotiations to co-star and To himself has said that he wants Orlando Bloom to be included in the cast. Consistent To collaborator Wai Ka Fai, is also part of the team. He is currently developing the script in close collaboration with To himself.

The movie will start production in June and will be shot in both Hong Kong and Macau.

There are rumors going around that there have been secret screenings being conducted for The Dark Knight in different parts of the US. While screenings like this are quite par for the course for many movies, the results of those screenings could be a cause for concern for both Batman and Heath Ledger fans.

According to rumors, there is a certain scene in the movie that has made viewers react negatively. The said scene shows The Joker (played by Ledger) pretending that he is dead and with him being pictured in a body bag. With Ledger’s untimely passing still fresh in the minds of many people, the effect has been less than desirable and this is leading executives to the decision to delete the said scene.

Although no one can confirm that there is indeed a scene like that in the movie, the decision to tear it apart could be a big disservice to the memory of Ledger, who is well known for being an uncompromising actor. In his memory, this movie should not be butchered.

We’re torn as to if this is a good idea or not. On one hand, the film is a film as it stands right now, and if film doesn’t let us transcend real life then it doesn’t work as a movie.

On the other hand, if there are real test audiences who are reacting badly, one establishing shot of a dead-looking Joker can probably be tossed without sacrificing the plot point, and if there’s one thing that is noticeable about The Dark Knight from the press, it’s that the film is already pretty dark.

This isn’t studio execs cutting out a sequence, from what we understand, it’s a shot. It’s the World Trade Center getting cut out of Spider-Man promotions.

However, this reports is slightly suspect because we haven’t heard from or even of anyone who has seen The Dark Knight. Especially for a hot property that is still running a full Alternate Reality Game online, it seems like news that these “secret screenings” were occurring would at least make a tiny rumble on the landscape.

Will Arnett is out as the voice of Kitt. And Val Kilmer is in.

Arnett, who gained popularity in Arrested Development had to bow out of his commitment to be Kitt’s voice in the revival of “Knight Rider”, according to Variety. The reason is a conflict in, believe it or not, cars.

Apparently, Arnett has been doing voice overs for General Motors commercials. He voiced the GMC trucks. But then in the new Knight Rider, Kitt is a Ford Mustang. Of course, when GM found out about this, the company asked Arnett to pull out of the project.

Actor Val Kilmer has now been reportedly hired to replace Arnett. It’s a bit surprising though why an A-List actor (well, to me he will always be A-List) agreed to voice a car in a TV show. Maybe, he’s a Knight Rider fan.

The Knight Rider pilot will be aired on February 17.

Another movie that has been affected by actor Heath Ledger’s untimely death is Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.

Ledger was shooting the movie in London and was about to report back to work next week. He has already shot a number of scenes and this has become the dilemma of the producers and Gilliam himself. It was reported that the producers and Gilliam are discussing a number of options: Finish Ledger’s scenes through post production work just like what happened with Brandon Lee in The Crow, recast Ledger’s role, or cancel the movie.

But there was also another rumor that just started to circulate that Gilliam is wooing Depp to “continue” Ledger’s role. Yes, continue and not replace. Apparently, in the movie, Ledger’s character is supposed to fall into a magic mirror and this could be a good excuse to show that Ledger’s face changes. Anything can happen in the movies.

Any news that leaks out for the fourth Indiana Jones movie is something that I eagerly devour. With production for the movie reaching fever pace in time for its eventual release in theaters next year, the producers of the movie are whetting the interest of viewers just a little more in order to heighten anticipation.

Take for example this picture of the divine Cate Blanchett on the set of the movie. Who wouldn’t be intrigued by that pose, that costume or the props used. I wonder what Ms. Blanchett’s role will be, but then whatever her role is, she always does an amazing job.

The Sci-Fi Wire reports that Todd McFarlane, creator of the once hit comic book “Spawn” is teaming up with Josh Olson (“A History of Violence”) to produce an updated revisionist take on “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”.

The duo is still working on the tone of the film (which, in all honesty, is probably not a good start) because the two don’t seem to agree on exactly what the feel, look, and (probably) audience will be. McFarlane wants a darker, PG-13 styled film, while Olson would like to do something more PG oriented.

Just my two cents – but I don’t think this one will ever see the light of day.

McFarlane has already done a pretty (IMO) disgusting version of the Oz characters as “action figures”. You can click here to see them. His version of the Wizard is pictured above, but I wouldn’t recommend looking at his version of Dorothy at work. There’s no nudity – but since she appears to be tortured, and is ALMOST naked – it still might get you in trouble.
