Vacations are over and now we have to find weekend entertainment to replace the beach and the barbecues. Luckily, Hollywood knows this and is always ready with a bold new lineup of films for the special month when we all start heading back to the movie theaters.

There are some interesting new concepts, but of course, we always have to have the tried and true themes that producers and directors know will draw the crowds. Here is a partial list of the interesting lineup:

Apollo 18:

The story of Apollo 18 has always fascinated would be space travelers. Will we finally find out the secrets that the United States was never willing to reveal? Space travel and adventure tinged with some political intrigue.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy

It’s been done before, but wild nights at a beach house is a sure bet for audiences of a certain age and mindset. If you’ve been working too hard at work or school, this may be the relaxation recipe you need. (Over 17, this is R rated.)

Shark Night

This movie is a little miss timed, since shark and other water monster movies are usually big hits for the summer, when we can really visualize the threat, but here we have Jaws, with all its watery terror, this time in the Gulf, off the coast of Louisiana.

Bucky Larsen: Born to Be a Star

Well, it’s a novice premise, in any case. What is it like to be the child of a porn star? Follow in their footsteps, what else. Turns out to be a rocky road to stardom, with a lot of bumps in the road. Needless to say, R rated.

Contagion

An all star cast tries to help the Center for Disease Control stop an airborne virus from spreading throughout the world. Called a “bio-threat thriller”, Matt Dillon, Jude Law and Kate Winslet bring their considerable skills to Oscar winning Steven Soderbergh’s excellent production.

Warrior

Well, every season has to have a good, down and dirty fight movie, so here it is. Nick Nolte stars as the son of a down and out former boxer who returns to his home town to save his father’s reputation and prove himself.

I Don’t Know How She Does It

Sarah Jessica Parker is no longer the Single Girl. Not only is she married, she is supermom, bringing home the bacon and practically raising the pigs to do it.

Dolphin Tale

The kids need a nice sweet hero saves the animal movie and this one fits the bill for a bittersweet story with a happy ending.

Money Ball

Can’t have the season end without a baseball movie, can we? It is a complicated business, even if it just a game, so a little ingenuity and a lot of computer analysis are brought to bear to save the Oakland A’s, despite their lack of financing.

There is a sure fire hit for every weekend of the month, and for every age audience, so go out and enjoy the season.

Cinema buffs have a lot to look forward to, as there are a lot of cool movies coming in September. This will be a good way to catch up with your long lost friends and schoolmates. And by doing a people search, it would be easier for you to get their contact details.

Hey guys, do you have any plans this weekend? I am off to visit family on Saturday and Sunday but I might squeeze in a movie before doing so and the one at the top of my list is Renee Zellweger’s New In Town. It is a very light movie, rated PG-13 – perfect for a weekend break from a long harrowing week.

From what I have read, the movie is about Lucy Hill, a corporate player who has high flying ambitions – to become president of the company one day. In her effort to impress her boss, she flies from Florida to Minnesota to oversee a small factory. Hence the “new in town” description I guess. The plot seems to be pretty easy to follow – new big city girl meets local boy. First they dislike each other and then gets to know each other and end up in one another’s arms.

Of course, there are other elements to the story, like Lucy receiving orders to shut the plant down. However, she saves the day somehow by thinking of a way for the plant to make money and thus satisfy the corporate bigwigs.

Looking back at what I have just written, I am pretty sure that this movie will be a no brainer. So why do I still have the desire to see it? Well, for one, we all need no brainers every now and then. Two, Renee Zellweger has been quite successful in portraying funny characters – and her Lucy Hill character has her own brand of funny, or so I’ve heard. Oh, it doesn’t hurt that Harry Connick Jr. is the co-star.

While many would argue that the issue is all about the films in question and not the marital affairs (or lack thereof) of the actors involved, there is no doubt that the two ideas cannot be separated in the case of Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. These two had a highly publicized falling out when Brad Pitt wandered and ended up with Angelina Jolie. Jennifer Aniston was recently quoted as saying some not so happy things about the current couple.

At the end of the day, however, movie sales are what we are all about and it seems that Jennifer Aniston came out on top of this matter. The Christmas release of the two movies – Marley & Me and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the former Jen’s while the latter Brad’s – has proven to be an unpredictable race. As it turns out, Marley & Me grossed at $14.8M, around $3M more than Benjamin Button.

Well I would have to say that this is a great Christmas present for the actress, who, despite releasing amicable words about the “competition,” is certainly harboring some secret hope that she could one up her ex this time around. Yeah, I am probably going out on a limb here by writing that but hey, she is human after all and any human being would harbor a desire of that sort, right?

All I can say is congratulations to Jen on the success of her Christmas release! Same to Brad Pitt, I guess.

As the summer of threes continue, another Pirates movie hits screens this weekend, that is if you haven’t already caught the film.

Johnny Depp returns to us as Captain Jack Sparrow in the swashbuckling movie Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. With high adventure, a little bit of humor & a lot of fun, this blockbuster is getting the box office rolling off to a good start.

Also in theaters this weekend is Ashley Judd’s Bug. Judd stars as a lonely waitress who becomes paranoid that there are actually bugs crawling under her skin. I have a sneaking feeling that if you’re terrified of insects, this isn’t the one for you!

All I have left to say is this before the weekend swallows us whole, “Arrrr!”

Tobey Maguire takes on the Spidey mask once again in this crime-fighting, web-slinging powerful new Spider-Man movie. Spider-Man 3 promises to entice us with not only one villain, but two- and really three if you think about it enough.

It’s going to be an amazing & crowded movie theater experience, so you had better get those tickets soon!

Lucky You, also premieres this weekend. The Eric Bana-starring film is about a card player who sets out to win the World Series of Poker, as well as the interest of actress Drew Barrymore.

First off, The Condemned which stars Steve Austin & Vinnie Jones. The raw movie is about a group of death row inmates, see the plot developing already?, that compete in a deadly game on a deserted island where the winner will live. Sounds like the next step in reality TV, right?

The Invisible, with Justin Chatwin, will also see its debut this weekend. Chatwin stars as a young man who is attacked & left for dead. Apparently, his spirit finds itself trapped in a sort of limbo, where he’s not quite dead & not quite alive. Interesting concept, for a DVD rental that is.

And I know you’ve been biting your nails waiting for Kickin’ It Old Skool, where a freak occurrence lands a 1980s preteen in a coma, only to wake up 20 years later to a much different world. Bringing back the 80s, old school.

Nicolas Cage stars in the last of the weekend movie releases in the film Next. Cage stars as a man that is being pursued by the government for the use of his ability, which is that he can see a few minor minutes into the future. Might help you with football game bets though.

All in all, it’s not the best weekend movie release, but not the worst either.

In theaters this weekend, be prepared to find something else to do, like feed the ducks at your local pond or the like.

If you haven’t seen a preview for the movie Vacancy, then you must be living in a very secretive cave, since the preview has been broadcasting just about everywhere.

This thriller that stars Luke Wilson & Kate Beckinsale is about a couple with car problems that check into a shoddy motel. Wilson & Beckinsale’s characters happen to discover hidden cameras watching them in their motel room & find themselves the victims of a snuff film.

Sounds more like an indie film gone large, doesn’t it? Can we say skip? Yep, I think we can.

Also hitting movie screens this weekend is the new Ryan Gosling film Fracture. Gosling stars as an assistant to the D.A. who is prosecuting a confessed killer, Anthony Hopkins, but things do not seem as simple as when he set out on the case.

Have to admit, this one kinda sounds interesting, right? A maybe, but only because of Sir Hopkins.

Another newbie to the screens is Hot Fuzz, a movie about a top London cop who is incidentally transferred to a rural town. Looks rather cute, a savior for this weekend’s releases if you ask me.

And lastly, In the Land of Women will see its movie debut. This film, which stars Adam Brody & Meg Ryan, focuses on a young man with a broken heart who moves in to care for his grandmother & finds his way into the lives of the family living across the street. This is going to need another skip, please.

All in all, not too hot of a weekend at the movie theaters. But at least we have Hot Fuzz & Fracture to keep us company, eh?

Well, the weekend isn’t looking too terribly shabby.

Disturbia is hitting movie screens this weekend & the film doesn’t look half bad. Shia LaBeouf & Carrie-Anne Moss star in this flick about a young man under house arrest who becomes a voyeur of sorts & suspects that one of his neighbors is a serial killer.

Yeah, happens to me all the time. Now, I know how most of you feel about the Matrix‘s Carrie-Anne, she’s a little on the annoying side, but I think we can all agree that we have found the perfect role to love/hate her in.

Also coming to the screens is a rather sexy number called Pathfinder. The movie focuses on a Norse warrior who was incidentally raided by Native Americans & wages his own personal war to stop the Vikings invasions.

That’s pretty sweet of him to take that all on himself, remind me to send him a thank you card. Skip this one, unless you’re just going for the eye candy.

Halle Berry’s Perfect Stranger is coming to the box office this weekend. Berry stars alongside Bruce Willis in this thriller about a man who might just be responsible for Berry’s friend’s murder.

Kind of a murder in the red barn kinda thing, looks decent enough & any movie where you can gaze at Halle Berry is a-okay in my book.

Comedian Eddie Griffin has a new film this weekend, Redline is about a group of drivers that find themselves caught in a competition for a large illegal cash prize. Just do what I do with any Griffin movie, skip it & burn the DVDs when they come out.

Lastly, Slow Burn will be sharing its debut at the movie theaters this weekend. The Ray Liotta film surrounds a district attorney who is trying to make heads or tails of a tough case involving the assistant D.A., a gand lord & a stranger. Sounds like a DVD rental to me.

Whatever you choose to spend that hard-earned cash on this weekend, enjoy & see you bright-eyed & bushy-tailed on Monday.

There’s no use ignoring the fact that we’re all pretty much pumped about Grindhouse finally getting into movie theaters this weekend. The Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez collaboration has us tingly all over & it’s not even lunchtime.

Grindhouse will release a double feature on screens this weekend, Rodriguez’s Planet Terror starring Rose McGowan & Tarantino’s Death Proof that sees Kurt Russell take the lead. All in all, we’re damn excited about these thriller releases & all agree that the weekend could not get here any faster.

Also in theaters this weekend, Are We Done Yet?, the new Ice Cube movie that sees the actor move out of the city with his family & into a fixer-upper home in the suburbs. Yeah, go ahead & skip this one, don’t ya think?

A new family film, Firehouse Dog, also sees its theater debut this weekend. Rex, a Hollywood canine, gets lost in a movie stunt scene & is adopted as a mascot for a local fire station. Sounds like this has family written all over it, in dog poo that is.

Hilary Swank’s The Reaping will be sharing the screens as well. Swank, who stars as a religious myth-buster, gets the surprise of her life in a small Louisiana town. I’ll leave this one up to you to decide.

So, Grindhouse it is & The Reaping a maybe. Either way, we’re in for one hell of a weekend, eh?

Blades of Glory sees Ferrell & Heder star as two rival ice skaters who were banned from the figure skating sport who find a loophole in the rules & team up together as a pair. Should be a rollicking good time, for a Farrell movie.

Also debuting this weekend, is the new film Meet the Robinsons. In this animated feature, boy genius Wilbur Robinson creates a machine to recover the lost memories of the past. Actually looks like a good family movie.

Next up we have The Lookout, which is about a former high school hockey champ who outwits a mob of criminals who plan on robbing the bank where he works as a janitor. Do I hear, skip?

And finally, Peaceful Warrior hits the screens this weekend. The film focuses on a stranger who leads a gymnast on a spiritual journey that will change his life. I’m also hearing skip on this one.

With Blades of Glory at your grasp, I feel that you only need to see one movie in the theaters this weekend, and make it a matinee at that!

In movie theaters this weekend, super creepy looking film Dead Silence debuts.

The movie is based around a man who returns to his hometown after a long absence to search for clues to his wife’s mysterious murder. The poor man comes back home only to uncover an ancient, deadly curse. I’ll bet he kicks himself for coming home then.

Also releasing this weekend is Chris Rock’s newest stab at comedic movies, I Think I Love My Wife. Rock stars as a happily married man who daydreams about other women quite often & ultimately is seduced. Might want to skip that one until it’s another TBS special.

Actress Sandra Bullock stars in Premonition where she takes on the role of a housewife that has visions about the death of her husband in a terrible car wreck.

I’ll tell you, I have my own premonition & that is, Sandra pick a better movie next time!

So, you tell me, what movies are you spending your money on this weekend?

So we all know, thanks to the well-deserved hype, that director Zack Snyder’s new film 300 is hitting theaters this weekend. And theaters this weekend better watch out, this is going to be a good one & a little bit raw.

The Warner Bros. film stars Gerard Butler as Spartan King Leonidas along with Lena Headey, Michael Fassbender, Vincent Regan & Dominic West. The ancient Battle of Thermopylae is detailed from its sour beginnings to its lessons-learned ending in only a way that graphic novelist Frank Miller (who is also a producer) can deliver. Rated R.

But also in theaters this weekend is The Ultimate Gift starring Little Miss Sunshine newcomer Abigail Breslin along with a full cast including Drew Fuller, James Garner, Ali Hillis & Lee Meriwether.

This Michael O. Sajbel-directed movie surrounds a family & a trust fund when a wealthy grandfather dies. But trust fund child Jason Stevens (Fuller) cannot get at his cash until he receives twelve ”gifts” that will help him along the road to life which basically sends him on a path of self-discovery. Rated PG.

Which brings us to Billy Bob Thornton’s The Astronaut Farmer, who knew you could cultivate & grow astronauts. Wonder if this type wears diapers as well. Thornton’s new movie is about a former spaceman who dreams of traveling in space & decides to set out on a plan to build his very own rocket inside his barn. Yeah, not to tempting, even coming from the man that was once somehow fortunate enough to be married to Angelina Jolie. Go figure….

Also out this weekend is Reno 911: Miami. Did anyone else know that that show was doing well enough to make a movie? I was a little surprised myself, to say the least. The police troop are called in to protect & serve when a terrorist disrupts a convention in Miami Beach. Oooo, sounds like the perfect setup for mischief & mayhem for Reno’s finest.

And last but not least, Jim Carrey’s The Number 23 will hit movie theaters this weekend. I never thought this one would be a top favorite, but among such company what’s a girl suppose to do? Carrey stars as a man whose life begins to unravel when he becomes obsessed with a book called “The Number 23.”

Now, off with you. Go see the movie of your choice & get back with me on which one was worth the eight bucks.

You know what’s funny? I just heard about this new movie Ghost Rider that’s coming out this weekend in the movie theaters. Ha! You have to know I’m pulling your leg. It’s not like the firey trailer has been promoted more times than I’ve heard the words ‘Anna Nicole Smith’ in the past two weeks. Jeez, I feel like I’ve seen the movie already!

Well, if you’ve been living in your stinky sock drawer, Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider hits theaters this weekend. Cage stars as a motorcycle stuntman who sold his soul to become the “supernatural agent of vengeance Ghost Rider.” Wow, if that tag doesn’t get you into a theater, I’m not sure what will.

Also to hit movie screens this weekend are Breech starring Ryan Phillippe as a young FBI agent that must find some proof that his bossman (Chris Cooper) has been selling national secrets to the Soviet Union.

Bridge to Terabithia will also ride the movie tide as an 11-year-old boy makes friends with an outsider tomboy who together discover the magical & imaginary world of Terabithia.

Hugh Grant & Drew Barrymore’s new date movie Music and Lyrics will treat you to a romantic comedy focusing on a washed-up singer (Grant) who joins up with a lyricist (Barrymore) to try and take a stab at a comeback.

And last, but not least- well maybe least, Daddy’s Little Girls, hits the screen this weekend. The film is about two worlds colliding when a lawyer finds love with a garage mechanic, a single father of three lovable daughters. Sounds like heart-wrencher.

My advice: Skip Ghost Rider ’cause you’ve basically already seen the whole thing already & head into Breech and see if you can’t figure out what’s truth & what’s not before it’s revealed.

Because I Said So stars Diane Keaton & Mandy Moore. Keaton takes on the role of an eager beaver mother who has good intentions in finding her daughter (Moore) Mr. Right. So, more of a I-can’t-believe-my-girlfriend-wants-to-go-see-this kind of film, right?

I know you have seen the trailers for The Messengers, as they have rarely left my television screen. The movie, with a not very starry cast, focuses on a family that moves into an old farm house & experiences ominous supernatural events. Yawn. We’ve seen this format of filmmaking too many times to count.

If you ask me, this is a stay-at-home-and-watch-Scrubs-reruns weekend. Unless you wanna go back to the theater and see Pan’s Labyrinth again, I wouldn’t blame you.

You tell me- What movies do you plan on watching this weekend?

Smokin’ Aces stars Ben Affleck & Andy Garcia in a movie Smokin’ Aces about characters who collide with the FBI when a Las Vegas mob boss takes out a large contract on a magician’s head of all things. Looks to be somewhat tasty.

Also out this weekend is Blood and Chocolate, where a teen werewolf must choose from her love of a human & betraying the werewolf code. A thumbs down perhaps?

Catch and Releases starring Jennifer Garner as a woman who must deal with the sudden death of her husband opens this weekend; as does spoof movie Epic Movie which takes on recent blockbuster films & slams them.

You tell me- Where are you taking that date this weekend? Catch and Release or Smokin’ Aces? I have a sneaking suspicion it may just be the latter.

For this weekend of Friday, December 8, you had better hold on to your hat. It’s a big movie release weekend, so be prepared to spend some cash, or do like I do & go from movie to movie.

Apocalypto: directed by none other than Jew-hater Mel Gibson; starring Rudy Youngblood. Early reports indicate that you should wait until the DVD release, if even that.

Blood Diamond: directed by Edward Zwick; starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou & hottie Jennifer Connelly. I think this one’s a keeper, I want a detailed report Monday from you though.

The Holiday: directed by Nancy Meyers; starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law & Jack Black. With this many stars how can you go wrong, right? I’m still a little skeptical, it’s one of those lovable, yet very cheesy holiday films. You tell me.

Unaccompanied Minors: directed by Paul Feig.; starring Lewis Black & Wilmer Valderrama. I would have never out those two together in a million years, but I can go with it. Looks interesting.

Make sure to save some of that cash for Friday, December 15 releases of The Pursuit of Happyness & Eragon.
