Richard Gere has always been a cooky guy & will apparently always be a cooky guy, no matter that he’s pushing 60.

According to the veteran (and I use this term loosely) actor, his new movie The Hoax deals with an event so far-fetched it’s basically unbelievable.

“People are going to watch this, particularly young people, and think it’s fiction,” Gere revealed.

“It’s bizarre, but it really happened.”

Gere takes on the role of Clifford Irving who apparently did such a good job convincing the publishing world that he had the authority to exclusively pen the autobiography of crazypants tycoon Howard Hughes that he received cash on the spot.

“You’d think a light bulb would have gone off, but people wanted to believe him. There was something to gain for everyone - money, prestige, power. He almost pulled it off,” Gere stated.

I think this might be just the perfect role for Gere, who is still trying to convince the public at large that he can act, which is really the hoax here, eh?
