[...] I will congratulate them on bringing back Elias Koteas as Casey Jones, who co-starred in the first live action film, but was noticeably absent from Secret of the Ooze. Casey-himself doesn’t get to do any fighting, unfortunately, and simply baby-sits the time-displaced samurai. However, Koteas also plays a character named Whit, presumably one of Casey’s ancestors, who gets his fair share of action during the feudal Japan portions of the film. I was a bit disappointed that Casey-proper didn’t get to do any fighting, but I was just happy to see him again. Koteas hadn’t lost his touch with the character, either. [...]

[...] Much like Phantasm III, TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze is a perfect example of what happens when the studio executives have more power over a film than the actual creators. While the original TMNT film was a near-perfect adaptation of the Mirage comic book series with only a hint of the cartoon, TMNT II draws nearly all its inspiration and atmosphere from the animated series, resulting in a very kid-oriented film that doesn’t withstand the test of time as admirably as the original.
[...] Steve Miner returns for another round of directing duties and molds Jason’s image even further. While I didn’t hate the burlap sack, I can’t deny, nobody sports the hockey mask better than Jason (not even Casey Jones). Friday the 13th part III was originally released in theaters in 3D during the big resurgence in 3D movies back in the 80’s (Amityville 3D, Jaws 3D, etc). This makes for some special effects that fall very flat when forced to watch them on video. Most of the 3D effects look either extraordinarily stupid or extraordinarily fake. Probably the worst offenders are the rattlesnake, the flying eyeball and the harpoon; on all of which you can clearly see the operating wires. [...]
