I don't think you can really consider this movie a 87 minute toy commercial. Anyone who's seen the toys of the new characters that appeared in the movie will notice that they were designed after the movie was made (with the exception of Ultra Magnus, whose design predates the transformers' line anyway). If you don't believe me then just just think back; Kup, Blurr, Wheelie, Galvatron. These guys transformation that would make a happymeal toy laugh. Arcee and Unicron had to wait 20 years before they got toy incarnations. Hotrod came out as a pretty cool toy but his transformation is different each time he transformers in the movie, making it obvious it wasn't clearly set for the animators at the time, who didn't have the toy for reference. The Rodimus toy came off the Hotrod design and was so lame that half of him didn't even tranform (his hips/legs don't move at all).

Wipe the slate clean for new toys to come? Yeah, maybe that's what the movie was trying to do. The were doing the same for the G.I Joe movie (which incidently only got TV?Video release because of T:TM poor sales) Killing off Prime was a mistake that eventually caused them to bring him back into the series. They had to rewrite their G.I.Joe movie to avoid the same effect.

T:TM obviously promoted the Transformers line, but wasn't a commercial for any specific toys; when they made the movie the exist characters who had toys got killed off, and the new characters didn't have toys. If you want to see a 88 minute toy commercial, watch the Headmasters series (4 x 22 minute episodes)

[...] New Namek (homeworld of Piccolo’s people) is suddenly attacked by a planet-eating war world called the Big Gete Star (think Unicron from Transformers the Movie only squishier). Dende, the new Guardian of Earth, senses the disturbance and enlists Goku and friends to save the troubled Namekians. Goku, Gohan, Krillen and the rest arrive on New Namek and face-off against a legion of powerful Cyclopean Drones. The battle is tough, but things only get more complicated when the mastermind behind the planet-chomping operation rears his ugly head: Meta Cooler! [...]

[...] The GoBots were always the Transformers’ ugly kid brother, so needless to say, the GoBots feature film was “just like Transformers the Movie, only not as good”. Not nearly as good, in fact. Actually, it wasn’t “good” at all. While the writing may have been only a few notches below that of the early Transformers stuff, it is still noticeably bad. Now, the Transformers’ character designs only bore a slim likeness to their toy counterparts, but the GoBots? They were precise animated realizations of their toys. As a result, it looks like a bunch of, well, TOYS fighting on screen, not actual characters. The barren desert landscape of the alien world, Cordax, also bears an unfortunate likeness to a kid’s sandbox. So yeah, basically you’re watching some kid play with his toys in his backyard. Thrilling. [...]

The Japanese thing was pretty done as a joke, honestly. The other guy, OnePumpedNinja, was supposed to write a review for the American dub and post it with mine...but that never happened.

This movie IS more than a toy commercial, and it's not just die-hard TF fans that can proudly say that. Since this is an ongoing mythology, the plot holes are all addressed in the following season, so it's not as much of a toy commerical as it is a THIRD SEASON G1 PROMO

(And I hate this Japanease series catergorisation BS, it's G1 season three, not TF 2010 or whatever crap they want to call it, especially since they compeltly screwed up TF after Victory)

Oh, and Peter Cullen and Frank Welker can and will forever RAPE Genda and Kato respectivly.
