Warner Bros. says “No More Movies with Female Leads”

October 10, 2007 by Jacob

Warner Bros president of production Jeff Robinov is a complete idiot. (Can you guess how I feel about this?) This fine gentlemen has decided (allegedly, now) that since Jodie Foster’s The Brave One, Emma Robert’s Nancy Drew, Hilary Swank’s The Reaping, and Nicole Kidman’s The Invasion fared poorly at the box office that Warner Bros. will no longer make films with women in the lead roles.

Update: Warner Bros has denied this, but I still feel it needs to be talked about…just to make sure we’re hitting home with how ridiculous this idea is.

Let’s address why those films might not have done so well:

The Brave One – With Jodie Foster coming off hits like Panic Room and Flight Plan, how could this one not be a hit? Oh yeah – maybe because no one has been going to Jodie Foster movies since Contact. On top of that, Jodie Foster’s core audience is largely female (can’t imagine why), and it might be – JUST MAYBE – that they don’t want to see a revenge picture. Maybe.

Nancy Drew
– Let’s see…did you see an ad for this thing? I didn’t. I had no idea a Nancy Drew movie even came out until I walked into the theater and it was playing. Obviously, I’m not the target audience, but Nancy Drew was released in the summer – I assume as counter programming – and that doesn’t always work. Why wasn’t this film released at a less crowded time? If it had been, a few people might have seen it.

Reaper and Invasion – I lump these two movies together because THEY WERE TERRIBLE! It’s not that the movies has female characters in them…it’s that they were bad movies.

NOTE TO WARNER BROS – STOP MAKING CRAP and PEOPLE WILL GO TO THE THEATER TO WATCH YOUR MOVIES!

That is all.

A “Work Print” of Rob Zombie’s Halloween Leaks Online

August 28, 2007 by Jacob

A “work print” of Rob Zombie’s Halloween has leaked online a full 4 days before the release of the film. The print is said to be near DVD quality…but it IS NOT the version of the film that you will see in theaters on Friday.

This is, instead, reported to be the work print of the film that was screened to test audiences. This print was not well received, and the feedback from it is what lead to massive reshoots on the film.

I don’t think it’s fair to just this “re-imagining” of Halloween based on this print, and if you’re a fan of the series, I don’t recommend downloading it (beyond the obvious fact that it’s illegal – it’s also not the theatrical version of the film).

No doubt, though, if this film does poorly, piracy will be blamed – regardless of the actual effect this had on the film.

G.I. Joe goes International because America just isn’t cool enough…

According to IGN, G.I. Joe is going international to appeal to a wider audience. When the concept hits the big screen, all of our favorite characters will be there, but they’ll be working for:

…a Brussels-based outfit that stands for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, an international co-ed force of operatives who use hi-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil organization headed by a double-crossing Scottish arms dealer. The property is closer in tone to X-Men and James Bond than a war film.

I have no idea what to think of that – but here’s hoping it’s a fun, action packed film that doesn’t make all of us want to cry.

Yo Joe!

Creator of “Spawn” sets his sights on “Oz”

August 22, 2007 by Jacob

The Sci-Fi Wire reports that Todd McFarlane, creator of the once hit comic book “Spawn” is teaming up with Josh Olson (“A History of Violence”) to produce an updated revisionist take on “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”.

The duo is still working on the tone of the film (which, in all honesty, is probably not a good start) because the two don’t seem to agree on exactly what the feel, look, and (probably) audience will be. McFarlane wants a darker, PG-13 styled film, while Olson would like to do something more PG oriented.

Just my two cents – but I don’t think this one will ever see the light of day.

McFarlane has already done a pretty (IMO) disgusting version of the Oz characters as “action figures”. You can click here to see them. His version of the Wizard is pictured above, but I wouldn’t recommend looking at his version of Dorothy at work. There’s no nudity – but since she appears to be tortured, and is ALMOST naked – it still might get you in trouble.

Michelle Monaghan & Nathan Fillion in “Trucker”

August 17, 2007 by Jacob

Michelle Monaghan, who has also just signed on to co-star in “Eagle Eye” with Shia LaBeouf, is going to be starring in a film called “Trucker” with Nathan Fillion of Firefly and Serenity fame according to Variety.
Nathan is one of those actors that you just look at and try to figure out WHY he isn’t a super star.  Hopefully, this film will be the one that makes Hollywood sit up and take notice.

In the film Monaghan plays a female truck driver who lives a careless life with no responsibility until she has to take in her estranged 11-year-old son after his father (Bratt) is hospitalized.

No word just yet on a release date.
