Movies Where Art Was Used As A Transformative Medium

June 29, 2016 by Truman

Art has the power to do things that nothing else does. It’s personal, intimate, thought provoking, has the ability to express every emotion on the spectrum in vivid technicolor, it’s unique, it’s make you make of it…the word that truly describes all that art encompasses in a life is the word transformative. Art is transformative. It’s magical. The way it works in each individual’s life is special and the story of transformation is never the same.

One art form that is brilliant at showing how art is used as a transformative medium is film. Film is able to present a story as if it were real life. It includes all of the senses and draws you into take you on a journey. March 18, 2016 by Truman

When you’re in an accident in real life, it can be one of the most terrifying experiences in your life. Obviously if it’s just a fender bender you might be shaken up, but you can usually drive away. Major accidents cause fear, panic, injury, and sometimes death.

March 11, 2016 by Truman

In this day and age, we’re all aware that smoking as a habit is bad for your health and the health of the people around you. It’s expensive, the smoke damages inside environments, etc., etc., etc. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t, as film and TV watchers, appreciate the sentiments and the energy that comes from an on-screen smoking scene or character. A shot to the heart or defibrillation on a wet patient straight from a swimming pool? Not in real life. Here are some major medical mess-ups made famous by films.

“The Abyss” Of Medical Errors

While medicine has come a long way since 1989, the medical shortfalls in James Cameron’s “The Abyss” were egregious even then – they got the practice of CPR completely wrong! Performing weak chest compressions with bent arms for a very brief period, unsurprisingly fails to restart the patient’s heart, and somehow the water surrounding the patient doesn’t cause electrocution when they administer shocks. January 25, 2016 by Truman

Addiction comes in many forms. There are behavioral addictions, genetic predispositions toward addictions, substance addictions, chemical addictions; and famous people and/or characters in movies are driven by those concepts the same as everyone else. On the big screen, they get a little extra theatrical rubdown, but that’s not to say those stories are larger than the ones that go on in everyday life.

Five movies that have addiction themes of note include “Thirteen,” “Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas,” “Blow,” “Easy Rider,” and “Trainspotting.” Each deals with primary characters with addictive tendencies, and each is a window from one set of creators to different sets of observers. [Read more…]
